Abstract: I will present three examples that illustrate sensory gating, integration and prediction. In the first, I will report on work done at Stanford on task switching and integration of visual information in prefrontal cortex. The second example, work done at Columbia, involves electrosensation in mormyrid electric fish, a model system for understanding how neural circuits predict the sensory consequences of motor actions. I will present new experimental and modeling results about the inputs to this system that, along with previous work from Curtis Bell and his collaborators, provide a fairly complete description of how it works. In the third example, I will discuss how lessons learned from the electric fish system are being applied to studies of the olfactory system of the fly.
